History of Book and Nutrition Centre (2005) Co. Ltd.

The Book and Nutrition Centre (2005) Co. Limited, an institution of West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventist, has since its inception, gone through a number of transitions on its journey into 2006.

The name Adventist Book Centre (ABC), known to the Adventist community internationally, also became widely accepted and recognized in the local Adventist community. The Book Centre operated under this name for the period 1919-1998. The overall business operations and that of overseeing the work of colporteurs were done in conjunction with the Publishing Ministry.

The local conferences had the responsibility of overseeing the operations of the ABC, with the Publishing Directors having as part of their portfolio, the overall responsibility for its operations. The Publishing Directors who assisted in the growth of the work in the early years included Pastors Balfour Hurst, I.B. Benson, George Wilson, and the late Albert Lyle.

In 1998, the Adventist Book Centre was renamed as Home Health Education Services (HHES) under the leadership of Pastor Milton Mahabee as Publishing Director, but the operation under this name was short-lived as in 2002, there was yet another name change under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Barrett. During the period there was the opening of a regional office in Ocho Rios and other branches in St. Thomas, Portland, St. Ann’s Bay and Portmore.

One of the most significant changes over the years took place in 2004, when a special Task Force under the chairmanship of Dr. Herman Ming was mandated to chart the course for the future operations of the BNC. The findings necessitated the official separation of the Publishing Ministry from the business operations. The Book and Nutrition Centre (2005) Company Limited was born, and it’s first General Manager, Marie Halsall appointed. Now an institution of West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the BNC has been given the mandate to become one of the income generating institutions in West Indies Union. Book and Nutrition Centre (2005) Co Ltd. was formally incorporated as a Limited Liability Company, with its Mission:

To be actively engaged in the sourcing and distribution of religious literature and nutritional products for the members of the Seventh–day Adventist church thereby creating and maintaining the confidence of the wider society, while seeking to motivate the staff to achieve and maintain the highest level of professionalism in-service to God and mankind.

With head office on the grounds of West Indies Union, housing seven employees, the organization continues to streamline its business operations. A major restructuring exercise took place in 2004, and the staff compliment and locations island-wide were drastically reduced. With 21 employees and two Area Managers over its eight locations island-wide, the significance of the BNC continues to be in the service it offers, providing truth filled literature both for the Colporteur Ministry, the church membership and the society at large. Of special significance is the fact that, the BNC recently opened its newest facility in the volatile area of Spanish Town, St. Catherine, which is thriving. The BNC continues to light the world with truth filled literature and nutritious product options, in the territory of West Indies Union.
